Profile

James has been teaching on the LLM at CCLS since 2001. He took the inter-collegiate LLM (Intellectual Property) part-time 1999-2001 whilst working in the intellectual property department of City law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse. He came first in QMUL in the LLM in 2001 and runner up in the University of London.

At CCLS he has taken part in research on the Discloure of Origin and Traditional Knowledge funded by the European Commission, been awarded the Herschel Smith Doctoral Schlorship and published in Intellectual Property Quarterly and European Intellectual Property Review.

He particularly enjoys teaching and has taught, marked and supervised postgraduate students and their examinations across areas of intellectual property and related fields at CCLS since 2001. He has also taught on topics of international intellectual property law at Sussex University and Southampton University. He is currently an external examiner at Southampton Solent University.

He is a Solicitor of England and Wales and Barrister of the Middle Temple, though originally took Biochemistry at undergraduate level at Kings College London. He was a member of the Joint Academic Stage Board from 2010 – 2013 and assisted the Solicitors Regulation Authority as an external examiner on the Legal Practice Course from 2007 – 2010.

James has worked in the intellectual property departments of other major law firms including Simmons and Simmons, Linklaters and Walker Morris in Leeds and for the past 12 years has run his own law practice in London, Mitchiners, specialising in intellectual property and technology law.
