The Freshfields arbitration lecture 2013

Published:
Prof Julian Lew QC, Prof Jan Paulsson and Sir Bernard Rix

Professor Jan Paulson, former head of Freshfield’s international arbitration and public law practices, gave the Freshfields arbitration lecture on 23 October 2013. The annual lecture is hosted by the School of International Arbitration at Queen Mary and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

‘Professor Paulsson, challenged his audience with a lecture on ‘Metaphors, Maxims and Other Mischief’. With his characteristic mix of originality, humour and provocation, Paulsson warned that ‘substitutes for thinking things through’ abound in the form of oft-repeated truisms and exhorted that ‘there are no shortcuts to resolving any issues in the law of arbitration that are worth thinking about’.
