The Training Programme on European Patent Law and Practice is an intensive two-part course for candidates who are preparing for the main papers (A, B, C and D) of the European Qualifying Examinations (EQE) to establish whether they have the requisite aptitude and knowledge to represent applicants before the European Patent Office (EPO).

  • Queen Mary, University of London, has been successfully running the EQE course for over twenty years.
  • It is taught by practitioners who deal with the EPO on a daily basis and have a wealth of experience in training professionals within their own firms.
  • The course reflects the practical nature of the examinations, with an emphasis on studying past papers of the EQE.
  • The Training Programme includes talks by successful candidates who have recent experience of the examinations.

Background

To qualify as a European patent attorney it is necessary to pass the European qualifying examination (EQE) administered by the European Patent Office (EPO). This examination has a pass rate of less than 50% and consists of four papers sat under exam conditions ranging from three to six hours per paper. The papers include three practical papers (drafting of patent specifications – paper A; amendment of patent specifications – paper B; opposing granted patents – paper C; and legal exam, sat in two papers European patent law – paper D).

Fee Information

  • Fee for 2 days in November 2013 and 3 days in January 2014 = £1,900
  • Fee for papers A and B (1 day in Nov and 1 day in Jan) - £1,150
  • Fee for papers A, B and C or A, B and D (1.5 days in Nov and 2 days in Jan) = £1,500
  • Fee for one paper of C or D (0.5 days in Nov and 1 day in Jan) = £600
